About Us
The Calgary Rugby Union Match Officials Society is a non-profit organization that oversees and administers the training, development, and allocation of Match Officials to rugby matches in Southern Alberta, from Red Deer to Medicine Hat.
We are passionate rugby enthusiasts, who work hard to ensure all games are played in a fair and safe manner. Invite us to your club's practice to discuss law interpretations. We're also a pretty fun bunch, so why not join us?

Our Mission
To develop and support match officials and the rugby community in Central and Southern Alberta.
Our Vision
Through member support, a love of rugby, and a strong sense of community, be a premier match official society in Canada.
What We Do
We provide match officials to rugby games of all age levels, for every combination of players per side (7-a-side, 10-a-side, and 15-a-side), including:
-
Junior club rugby - Under 13 and up to Under 18 age categories,
-
High School & University rugby,
-
Senior club rugby – Women’s & Men’s developmental and competitive divisions,
-
Tournaments, such as the Stampede 7’s, which can attract international teams, and
-
International matches.

Our Values
Fairness
We believe that every good game starts with respect. Upholding fairness in every decision reinforces the integrity of the game and ensures equitable treatment for all players and teams.
Community
We aim to recognize and grow rugby's power to unite our community by fostering connections and building bonds that reach beyond the field.
Fun
It's a game after all right? We want to ensure every match is filled with excitement, and everyone leaves with an even greater love for our awesome sport.
Our History
1960s
Start of Organized Officiating
In the 1960s, organized rugby refereeing began to take shape in Alberta, mirroring similar efforts in neighboring provinces. With rugby growing in popularity, local enthusiasts recognized the need for a structured system to support and develop match officials. This foundation laid the groundwork for a dedicated community of referees who ensured fair play and upheld the spirit of the game.
November 9th, 2010
Official Incorporation
By 2010, these efforts culminated in the official incorporation of our society as an independent organization in Alberta. This milestone marked a new chapter, providing referees with formal support, training, and resources to elevate their officiating skills. It also strengthened the ties within the rugby community, solidifying the role of match officials as central to the sport's continued growth.
Now
Supporting Match Officials Everywhere
Today, we are proud of the progress we've made. Alberta match officials are officiating matches at all levels, from local tournaments to international games, and gaining invaluable experience while showcasing the professionalism and passion that define our society. We remain committed to training the next generation of referees, fostering a love for the sport, and contributing to rugby's vibrant legacy across the province and beyond.
